Cancelled Meetings

A trade show does not cancel itself.

When an organizer writes that its annual meeting is cancelled because of the State’s order, the county’s gathering cap or the convention center’s closure, it is describing the reach of an order on the day the order took effect. The statute names three things an order can limit: commerce, travel and group meetings. A cancelled convention is the third limitation made visible. It is also the first two: the exhibitors who could not sell, the hotels and restaurants that lost the week, the printers, caterers, drivers and stagehands whose work was the meeting. The date is the date the organizer spoke; the quotation is the organizer’s reason in its own words; the exhibit opens the notice itself. Where an event was a season rather than a single meeting (a fair circuit, a sports season, a cruise schedule) the notice is the announcement that ended or shortened it.
